Access to Justice in Citizenship

Determination

Project

This project was a collaboration between Queen Mary University of London and NLSIU. It is an effort to analyze the decisions of the Foreigners Tribunals and Assam High Court from 2009 onwards. It integrates international and municipal legal standards with empirical case studies, focusing on citizenship determination processes in Assam. LSC members lent research support to the project.

Contract Worker Project

The committee assisted in the regularization of the contract workers working in the surrounding  college area. The workers were interviewed by the members of the committee and opinions were sought from different legal counsels. Data has been collected along with research  conducted by the committee on labour laws. 

Construction Worker’s Project

In order to improve the welfare of construction workers in the surrounding areas, the committee conducted studies  of various laws and surveyed up to thirty construction workers as to the conditions of their work.

Bootcamp

A session on how to file Right to Information requests and make appeals was organized in order to ease access to information and increase transparency by familiarizing people with the method of filing these requests.

Project Nipun - 
Disability Rights 
Project

The Disability Rights Project, Project Nipun, is a student-led initiative of the LSC. It was formulated in 2021, and has three proposed components - provision of legal aid on disability-related issues, awareness generation on the subject and undertaking research project on disability rights in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, with research questions including the impact of virtual workspaces on disabled persons, judgements passed in relation to disability and their implementation, as well as how lockdowns have impacted access to essential services for disabled persons.

Worked with Mission Accessibility headed by Rahul Bajaj to document the experiences of users with disabilities online. Additionally, sent out legal notices to industry giants, and contacted the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People and the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disability, looking to conduct a sensitisation workshop for developers of apps and platforms

Transgender Inclusion Code

The Transgender Inclusion Code (‘Code’) was drafted by members of the Legal Services Clinic  in 2019 to ensure that transgender persons who come to the university in the capacity of  students, teachers, participants, or employees are protected from discrimination and are given  other forms of protection to ensure their inclusivity and integration. The drafting of the Code  had begun in 2015 following the Supreme Court’s decision in National Legal Services  Authority v Union of India.
