Legal Services Clinic,
National Law School of India University

We are the

The LSC at National Law School of India University is one of India’s longest-standing, student-run legal aid initiatives. For over three decades, we have sought to bridge the gap between legal education and access to justice.

About Us

The Legal Services Clinic was founded in 1997 and opened a dedicated clinic building in 2005. What started as a small clinical initiative has since grown into a dynamic institution that blends casework, research, policy engagement, and community outreach.Over the years, LSC has assisted multiple clients, collaborated with leading NGOs and state bodies, trained students in community lawyering, and contributed to public interest litigation on issues such as juvenile justice and anti-discrimination. In 2014, our work was recognised globally with the MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship.

Our mission is two-fold: providing legal aid to individuals and communities who are otherwise excluded from the justice system, and advancing legal awareness through rights-based education that is accessible and empowering. In doing so, LSC creates a living classroom where students of law develop professional skills anchored in a deep commitment to public service.

What We Do

RESEARCH & COLLABORATIONS

Beyond legal aid, LSC has built a strong presence in the field of policy research. Our students regularly assist leading organisations, including the Centre for Child and Law, Centre for Juvenile Justice, Dhwani Legal Trust, Nyaaya, OutLawed India, the Nightingale Medical Trust, Project 39A, the Migration Asylum Project, Enfold India, DAKSH India and the India Justice Report in developing research outputs, policy analyses, and legal resources.

This work allows students to contribute meaningfully to ongoing debates on justice reform, while gaining hands-on experience in translating legal knowledge into policy impact. In doing so, LSC serves as a bridge between academic learning, research practice, and systemic change.

LEGAL AWARENESS

At LSC, we believe that justice is not only about legal representation but also about awareness of one’s rights. Our Legal Literacy Programmes (LLPs) bring law into classrooms, workplaces, and community spaces through skits, storytelling, visual aids, and interactive exercises in Kannada, English, and Hindi, covering themes such as child rights, consumer protection, digital safety, gender justice, and labour law.

In addition, we have organised expert-led workshops on trauma-informed client counselling and hosted public talks on justice system reform with leading jurists and activists, including Prashant Bhushan, Anup Surendranath, Maja Daruwala, and Justice S. Muralidhar.

PRO BONO
LEGAL AID

At the heart of LSC’s work is our panel of pro bono lawyers, accessible via email at lsc@nls.ac.in. The clinic operates on a referral system, connecting individuals to our network of empaneled lawyers. As a student committee, we do not directly provide legal representation; instead, we facilitate access to a panel of dedicated lawyers, many of them NLSIU alumni based in cities such as Bengaluru, Delhi, Chandigarh, and Pune.

If you are seeking assistance, you can reach us in two ways: by filling out the form available on our website, or by writing to us directly at lsc@nls.ac.in. Our team will review your request and connect you, where appropriate, to our panel of pro bono lawyers.
